For the love of Mystery, Mayhem, and …
Murder Mystery shows have changed a bit over the years, and so have the audiences. Why this matters? Mostly because the audience helps shape the show. Today’s audiences tend to be younger, from hoodie-clad college students to Millennials out for a new interactive experience. (And yeah they’ll still let your parents play.) These are perfect for date nights or friend groups.
Dinner and a Murder
One of the more popular dinner theatre shows in California is The Dinner Detective (Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, Long Beach, San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento, Thousand Oaks, Claremont).
These usually include four course meals, four act shows, and a lot of fun. Their presentation is less hokey than the traditional type — no cheesy costumes for criminals.
Their scripts are based on real cold cases, and the culprits are sitting among you, dressed as regular people. The detectives (the only ones donning costumes) interrogate everyone in the room to find clues to investigate with the help of guests.
At the end of the night, you could win one of the prizes awarded to top sleuths.
SoCal Scavenger Hunt
If you’re not one for lingering over dinner, you might try the Murder Mystery Scavenger Hunt (Laguna Beach, San Clemente, Old Town San Diego). For this murder mystery adventure you’ll head out around town with a team and a list of clues, riddles and puzzles to help you discover whodunnit.
Suitable for both locals and tourists, they tell me that knowing your way around the area doesn’t really help you much. Also, you’ll have a help line if you get stuck on a suspect.
